I3 Academy opened in Birmingham on August 20, 2020. The I3 Academy student population consists of students in grades K-5, zoned for Birmingham City Schools within the Woodlawn community and its surrounding neighborhoods. Students enrolled will be reflective of the Woodlawn community in race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. I3 Academy seeks to provide another educational opportunity for parents as part of a holistic neighborhood revitalization effort. I3 Academy is named “I3” to stand for three words that being with the letter I: imagine, investigate, and innovate, representing the skills that teachers and leaders will foster and develop within learners who attend I3 Academy.
I3 Academy is founded on the belief that all children should have access to enriching and appropriately challenging learning experiences that prepare them for their chosen path in college or career. The educational model promotes a strong academic foundation, social-emotional learning, project-based learning, and Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) integration in the curricula. Through these foundational skills and experiences, learners will be problem solvers who are prepared for a complex and ever-changing global workforce. The educational plan and school design address the academic, physical, social and emotional needs of each child. This holistic approach supports both in- and out-of-school factors that contribute to student learning. I3 Academy will implement a number of curricular components that are aligned with Alabama state standards, including a three-tiered approach to intervention, specific math and literacy labs for students, and the incorporation of extracurricular activities within the extended school day. Visual arts, music, and instruction in Spanish will enhance the curricula of I3 Academy.
